When in doubt go with 32bit. You could download the 64bit version and see if it runs and if it is any faster, but I doubt it. My impresion of 64-bit was that it primarily allowed use of memory sizes larger than 4GB, not so much on computational performance. That said, I think you have to have a 2008 or newer hardware with Core2 Duo or better 64 bit processors and 64 bit EFI. You can check your firmware version by running this command from terminal:

ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi

my MacBookPro is 3 years old so it came back

where the important part is EFI32, which means no 64-bit for me. If you do have what it takes I think you still have to reboot and hold down the 6 and 4 keys. You can find some more info here:
