The problem is predicting the convergence of a couple moving pieces.
Currently Apple makes one phone for everybody in the world so that one
phone uses GSM for it's 3G communications. Verizon doesn't use GSM so
they and other GSM holdouts like Sprint are left out of the game. There
are two things coming down the pipe. One possibility are new hybrid
chipsets like Qualcomm's which talk both CDMA (VZ) and GSM (Everybody
else). If Apple we're to use those chips then they could have a VZ
compatible phone. That smells like an inelegant solution to add hardware
just to support a single (albeit large) telco, so I have my doubts. The
second possibility is the new 4G networks VZ is building on the new LTE
spec which is also supported by AT&T. The main competitor is WiMax and
the wagons are still circling as to which one will win out on a global
scale, but if LTE appears to be the winning horse we could see a single
iPhone with LTE working on multiple US and international phone networks.
Downside is that LTE is so new that availability will probably be spotty
for some time. So this is going to be a long-haul change which will only
happen with a new phone releases and telco infrastructure rollouts. More
info on WiMax and LTE here:

Hi. It's worth noting that there has been no official confirmation of
a Verizon iPhone. There have been some pretty substantial rumours, so
it's a good bet that it will come out. Keep in mind however that up
until just before its release last year, the iPod Touch was rumoured
to have a camera.
