Hi. yeah, if you don't need firewire, then the $999 mac book is the way to go. However, I will say that the case on the mac book pro is much more durable and scratch resistant etc. so, if you're going to be using it in some rough and tumble environments, then I'd go with the pro. It would be worth the extra money.
