Hello Allison, I don't think anything has changed in Pages recently as I use it all the time for my translations.
You have to interact with the Layout Area, and then with the Page, and finally with the Header, Body or Footer. Spell checking has to be done with Command-; (semicolon) as the VO spell check command doesn't work with Pages.
