Hello May,

I use an ancient PAC Mate 20 display alone with my MacBook. I just connected it 
and it was recognised in the VoiceOver Utility. It's USB only, of course, and 
the connection used to be a bit problematic until one of my dogs pulled the PAC 
Mate onto the floor and bent the USB connector, since when the connection has 
been perfect!

I don't recommend this as a solution to connection problems, but it fixed mine.
