Hi again all,

And here are the directions. These were passed to me by someone on this
list, I just can't remember who any more. So, whoever you were, thanks,
your knowledge continues to be disseminated. Oh, and this isn't as hard as
it looks. I kept these instructions to refer to the first few times, but
now I can practically do it in my sleep.
Donna

1. open itunes and go to the song you want to use for your ringtone
2. press cmd--I to get info and go to the options tab.
3. check the start and end time boxes. [note, make sure you know where
you want your start and end to be. this must be 40 seconds or less]
once you've selected the allotted time, click OK.

(Note from me, you can forward the song to the place you want the
ringtone to start. The LCD area will show the remaining time left in the
song. Subtract that from the total song time, and you've got your start
position)

4. Go to Advanced and select create AAC version. this creates a
duplicate of your selected song.

5. Now, the song you just created should be sitting below your
original in the songs table as an aAC version. go to the original, you
will know it's the original because the time is still the original
length. Now you should get info again on the original track, ensuring
the track is highlighted, and uncheck the boxes you checked
previously. This will make sure your song is in tact.

6. Now highlight your duplicate song, the one you made for your
Ringtone. Show it in finder with Cmd-r and hit cmd--c to copy. Paste it to
your desk top and delete
the duplicate in itunes. [this must be done or else the following
steps will not work]

7. Rename the file on your desktop, with the m4r extension. all you
need to do is hit enter/return on the file on the desktop and go to
the end of the file name, deleting the m4a and typing m4r.
8. Go back to itunes and hit add to library cmd--o. find your new
ringtone on the desktop and import it. (You can also just go to your
desktop, and hit CMD-O while on the file.
9. Go to your ringtones playlist and it should be there.
10. Sync your iphone.

Subject: making ringtones with itunes still works

Hi all,

I just made a ringtone in itunes from a song I had purchased from the itunes
store, and it worked like a charm. I think the only change in iTunes 10 is
that they took that option out of the Store menu. I never got that to work
anyway, so as far as I'm concerned it's no great loss.
I'll now post my set of instructions for making a ringtone in itunes.
