Hi Cheryl,
I took a look at the current Kobo Books set up, and from what you say,
now when you double tap the center of the screen to bring up the page
controls, and find "Icon Gear" in the top right corner of the screen,
you can't locate the "Display Settings, button" by moving your finger
down the screen from "Icon Gear". Apparently the page controls can
now come up either with or without the controls for fonts, overview,
screen brightness and settings on the bottom half of the screen, and
this appears to have changed in the version they released (3.4.1 on
August 28) just after I posted my instructions. I'm cc'ing the new
instructions to the macvisionaries list. Here's another way to
navigate to the "Display Settings, button" which didn't work at the
time of my earlier post:
1) Double tap the center of the screen to bring up page controls, and
check that they are present by finding the "I'm Reading, button" at
the top left corner of the screen by either touching this corner, or
doing a four-finger flick up to navigate to it. Flicking right from
the "I'm Reading, button" should take you to an "Icon Gear, button" at
the top right corner of the screen. These buttons are just below the
status bar icons for signal strength (at the top left) and battery
power (at the top right), respectively. However, now the default
seems to be that when you bring up page controls, you only display
these two buttons at the top of the page, and a position slider at the
bottom of the page -- you don't bring up the buttons for getting to
the "Settings" menu or for adjusting fonts, etc. These only come up
when you double tap the "Icon Gear, button" at the top right corner of
the screen, after you've brought up the page controls.
2) Do a four-finger flick down to move to the end of the page.
VoiceOver should say "Toggle Night reading mode". If it says something
like "minus 0 per cent, adjustable; swipe up or down to adjust the
value", do a four-finger flick up to move to "I'm Reading, button",
then flick right to
3) Flick left six times till you hear "Display Settings, button",
then double tap anywhere on the screen.
4) You should now be on the Settings page (which won't be labeled
with a heading) and be able to flick down to the "Page transition
style" category and then flick right to set this to "Scrolling" and
double tap.
5) Navigate back to the "Back, button" in the top left corner (either
by touching it, or by doing a four finger flick up), and double tap to
return to the previous screen.
6) Touch the center of the screen (away from any of the page controls
-- anywhere in the top third of the screen will do), then double tap
to dismiss the page controls.
You should now be able to navigate through the book using the links.
The major change for VoiceOver users between version 3.4 (released
August 20) and 3.4.1 (released August 28) is that bringing up page
controls by double tapping in the center of the screen (after ensuring
that focus is not on any of the buttons etc. by simply touching the
center of the screen first), does not bring up the controls in the
bottom half of the screen that allow you to access the settings, or
read the overview of the book and access the chapters.
I'll describe these controls in detail assuming that you do a four
finger flick down to reach to the last element on the full page
controls, which is (3b) "toggle night reading mode, button" in the
bottom right corner. I'll number the buttons according to their row
number in the bottom half of the screen, with a letter giving the
order of their appearance, from left to right. (Since we are flicking
back from the end of the page, these appear in inverted order).
Flicking left from there you have buttons for:
1. (3a) "toggles screen rotation lock" (bottom left)
2. (2d) "increase brightness" (far right, first of two buttons above
"night reading mode")
3. (2c) "reduce brightness" (right, second of two buttons above "night
reading mode")
4. (2b) "increase text size" (left, second of two buttons above
"rotation lock")
5. (2a) "reduce text size" (far left, first of two buttons above
"rotation lock")
6. (1d) "display settings" (far right, just above "increase brightness")
7. (1c) "overview" (right, just above "reduce brightness"
8. (1b) "browse bookmarks" (left, just above, "increase text size")
9. (1a) "add or remove bookmark" (far left, just above "reduce text
size")
In summary, there are three rows of buttons in the bottom third of the
iPhone screen when you double tap the "icon gear" button in the top
right corner after bringing up page controls. The key buttons you
want to reference are (1d) under item 6 -- the "display settings"
button and (1c) under item 7 -- the "overview" button.
You only need to access "display settings" once, to change the page
view to "scrolling". This will automatically let you navigate through
text with continuous reading. When you reach the end of a chapter,
you will be at a link, and double tapping will take you to the next
chapter.
The other control you might want to use is (1c) under item 7. This is
the "overview" button with the "About" tab summary description of the
book, and the "Contents" tab list of chapters. In the earlier
versions of the Kobo ebook reader, the same information was always
available through an "Info related" button at the top right corner of
every page that allowed you to view table of contents and easily
navigate to any chapter. In the present version of the Kobo ebook
reader, you need to:
1. double tap the center of the screen to bring up page controls
2. double tap the "Icon Gear" button in the top right corner of the
screen to bring up page controls other than a position slider (new
extra step in 3.4.1 since the previous version 3.4 released eight days
earlier)
3. touch or flick to the "overview" button and double tap it to bring
up the screen "about" the book.
4. flick right to the "Contents" and double tap
5. navigate (flick right or do a two finger flick down to "read all
from current point", stopping with a two finger tap, to the chapter
you want, and double tap.
These instructions are for the iPhone version of the Kobo app -- I
haven't checked this on the iPad. I'd update my earlier instructions
and post them at Applevis, but I'm afraid that they'll change the app
navigation again in the minor version changes.
Let me know if there are problems with these instructions. This
presumably addresses the questions Dean Martineau had about the app.
Fortunately, once you change the page style to scrolling, you don't
need to revisit this -- you only need to make this change once, and
leave it.

table of contents navigation:

Esther's instructions for Kobo are excellent except that I
absolutely can not get into settings no matter what I do. I sure
wish they hadn't changed it; it used to be a button that one could
easily access. Tapping in the center of the screen with a book open,
with vo on or off, does not yield the settings screen for me.
