Jim, I would suggest that you re format the drive before using it on your mac. Try formatting it as a fat 32 or if you only use it on a mac, a mac file structure. I'm assuming that you have a drive formatted as an ntfs file structure.
Macs osx will read from ntfs but don't write to them.
