don't laugh but what I did was the following 1. downloaded thunderbird and transfered all of my mail in there and then exported it in to the approprate formats. 2. uploaded these using dropbox or coppying them to another drive.
3. went to apple mail and imported and then transfered all of my imported messages in to mail and created the folders. that matched the import.
