Thanks to Annie and Colin I successfully unlearned my misspelled word (though I still can't spell it correctly :) ).
I realize the purpose of this list is to ask questions, but I'm wondering how I could have better investigated this on my own? I understand that MacOS has rather extensive help, but I couldn't find anything under the help for dictionary or mail. I tried the index under "mac help", but clicking any of the letters (double tapping the trackpad to be persise) had no disearnable affect. In mail I entered the string "spell" into the search interactive dialog, but only saw the various spelling options that are available in the edit menu. I then gave up and posted my question, but assume I have a lot to learn yet about the Mac help facility because it has not proven very useful so far.
