Also, under the windows menu there is a item called connection wizard or something close to that. If you select that, it will test all the accounts you have set up, and tell you which ones are working. I don't remember the detail listed there, but there might be a disclosure triangle to provide more information.
The actual SMTP configuration is under a window opened from a buttonon the accounts tab of your mail preferences.
