Hi Geoff!
After 3 experiments sending mock emails to myself I think I might have a 
suggestion, going by what you said you've noticed you have something to change 
during your spell checking\send so vo+shift+m scroll down to spelling and 
grammar sub menu and in there should be hide spelling and grammar!
When I did this it went back into the message and I could do any corrections, 
and without going back to spelling\grammar menu I command+s to save and it did 
and then I used command+w to close and it did without sending!
