Hi heather,

F10 is used to toggle Mute on and off.
F11 to turn volume down and F12 to turn it up.

These keys have been available on Macs since back in the 90s but have just 
lately been made standard both on the Desktop and laptop keyboards to be F10, 
F11 and F12.
