Cheree Heppe here: I'm trying to decide the same thing.
If you require a big screen, then you have to most likely use the IMac. If you don't, then, for the price of an IMac, you could buy the Mac Mini, use any old monitor, but the Mini doesn't require a monitor to operate, and use the remainder of that money that would have gone for the IMac to get a MacBook Air. This would give you both a desktop, stay at home model and a laptop mode.
