The only problem with getting duxbury systems to develop... Well, there are a few actually.
One, they've got nothing and would have to start from scratch. That would be fine, except we've already got louis and IBraille. IBraille is probably only going to work with index embossers if they ever get off their asses and update it, but at least the groundwork is done. Louis looks great except for one thing. I can't find any documentation on it. That's not so good, but if I can ever get my head around it, it should work with a wide range of embossers, as well as intergrating with text edit and other mac software. So that's not useless once we figure out how to use it. Two, duxbury systems is going to want to charge the earth for translation software. They are still back in the dark ages of technology and assuming that governments and rehab agencies will continue to fund outrageously expensive technologies indefinitely. Fact of the matter is, computer funding here in Ontario just got cut in half, and in two years time funding for major windows screen readers is more than likely going to be either severely restricted or cut altogether thanks to the effectiveness of systems like mac OS, vinux, and NVDA. I'm not really hip to the idea of duxbury systems starting now and spending two or three years on development only to see funding slashed and have 80 percent of our blind people end up unable to afford it. I think we should make what we have work, since the development has already been done and the solutions are either free or low cost. That's why a lot of us switched to mac after all. We were tired of getting soaked for thousands of dollars on proprietary reading and writing aids when off the shelf systems are working just as well nowadays.
