Keep in mind, also, that there's a hardware controller specifically made for GarageBand which, I think, is made by M-Audio but I don't recall for sure. At any rate, it used to be sold in the Apple Store so there would be a good place to look first. Its layout is modeled after the GarageBand interface and it's just a little quicker to reach for a hardware control sometimes rather than navigating the interface with a screen reader. It's not that expensive either—I seem to recall it being somewhere around $99 or even less.
