I had a number of music files on a Windows desktop that I wanted to transfer to
my MB Pro. This is what I did.

1. I connected to my Windows desktop via my home network. Assuming you have set
up a network properly, you can view what is available on your network by
pressing cmd-shift-k from within any Finder window. You may want to do this for
some of the music on your iPhone
, if the only location you have it backed up is on an internal drive in another
computer. Alternatively, connect your external drive to your MB Pro.

2. I navigated to the files I wanted to copy to the iTunes library on my Mac.

3. I selected them, and pressed cmd-c to copy the files to my clipboard.

4. In iTunes, I navigated to my music table, but did not interact with it.

5. I pressed cmd-v to paste the files I had copied to my clipboard.

Because I had not changed the default in iTunes of copying new files to the
iTunes music folder when importing new tracks, the tracked were simultaneously
imported into my iTunes library and copied to my MB Pro. Of course, there may
be a simpler way to do this if you have home sharing turned on, but I haven't
messed with that, and that wasn't an option for me, as I had needed to reformat
my main hard drive. Fortunately, my iTunes library was on a secondary internal
hard drive which was not affected by what ever went bad with that particular
machine.
