Hello David, You seem to be having the same problem as many others with 2010 machines. I don't know why this is, but the older machines seem to be immune.
To fix it, shut down your machine, then boot it from the Snow Leopard installation disc. On the screen after the Language Chooser screen, go to the menus and from the Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. In there, do REpair Disk. This should fix your problem.
