It would start doing its own back up  when the VO cursor passed over the 
"backup" button without pressing it.  On my disk that I got on Black Friday 
from Apple, it appears that the software actually on the disk is incompatible 
with Snow Leopard, so I downloaded a version much newer, installed the WD 
special SW that is supposed to speed up disk access, download new disk firmware 
and then got only 40GB stored iVia time machine before the disk claimed to be 
mangled beyond any additional writing.

After uninstalling the WD software from my applications, and rebuilding the HFS 
partition a fourth time, the drive is working faster at time machine backups, 
and passed the disk utility first aid tests.

If anybody wants the software that causes the Virtual CD to disappear  I have 
it stashed away.

Beware of the WD software that Western Digital supplies.  I spent several hours 
fighting the beast and getting corrupt disk partitions, and locked up WD 
software.  Also found that
