On removeable storage, i have seen a .trasheshs in the root directory of the partitation. The dot at the begining of the name is Unix way of hiding files. IT mmight be that hfs has acompletely different method. For example, alias file on HFS disk, will track changes when the linked file is renamed or moved. Certainly some resources are altered on trashed files.
