HiCarolyn,

PDFs are imported from outside of iBooks via iTunes.  You would add the PDF to 
iTunes as if adding a song or audiobook.  Then the next time you sync your IOS 
device it would be in iBooks.  I'm not 100% sure of this but, I think all the 
books you get directly from iBooks are in the epub format

All purchases on your device are generally synced to iTunes.  Just like your 
apps.  You can't use them on your Mac but they're there.  I think this is for 
the sake of backing things up..
