Yes it is for compilation albums like you suggested. What I have noticed from the behaviour is that if you use the playlist browser to navigate music like I do, you will find your artist name will vanish from the browser, and be listed in a artist known as compilations instead. I have reported this to Apple and for now unchecked the compilations tab from all my albums so the artists names show back up int the playlist browser again.
