Hello Joanne, I use the combination of VueScan and ABBYY FineReader for scanning and OCR on the Mac. I get excellent results from this arrangement.
VueScan costs around $79 US and ABBYY FineReader around $90 US. The setup process is a bit fiddly, but once it's done, everything works smoothly. I configure VueScan to produce TIFF files as I don't use this format for anything else, and I set all TIFF files to open with ABBYY FineReader by default. I can't compare this to anything on Windows as I've never used Windows.
