Hello Stuart.
I'm using a mac mini with snow leopard server and it works amazingly well.
I've got all of my drives shared on the network and am able to access any of my
files and folders that I might need on my macbook or my windows 7 netbook.
One thing that you will need to do is to make sure all of your drives are
formatted in the mac os extended format or you will not be able to share them.
I learned this the hard way.
I'm not sure about home automation software.
Let me know if I can help further.
