Christine, There is a very consistent and somewhat logical reason for the delema you're facing Almost all of us Outlook/Windows patriots encounter the same problem on both the Mac and the iPhone. Once you understand why you are encountering this problem, you will think it ever so obvious.
In short, unlike with Outlook, there is no setting that allows for the same settings between the incoming server and the outgoing server. This means that you must enter the account password in the smtp edit box and, moreover, you must specify the type of password protocol you are using. I cannot remember the choices in the list box when entering this information but it should make since to you at the time of entry. One more thing, the type of password protocol used will depend upon your Internet Service provider. I could get more specific but I trust that you get the general idea.
