Good points being made here.  And, I don't know yet whether there's something 
in group settings that would accomplish Alex's idea.  In the mean time, to 
reply to an individual, what works for me is to use cmd-y to add sender to 
address book, cmd-N for new message, and type the first couple letters of the 
sender's name.
