Hi Tony: I think you can set those Skype notifications in preferences, (command comma). Also, you can read conversations by interacting with their window. One simple rule I teach is when using the Mac, if something appears not to be working, don't give up unless you've tried interacting with it. (vo-keys-shift-down arrow, and uninteract is vo-keys-shift-up-arrow.
