A VM stands for a virtual machine which is what it sounds; a virtual computer. Using virtual machines, you can run say windows on snow leopard; that means that both operating systems are active at the same time. If you're interested in doing something like that on snow leopard, look at VMWare fusion; last I've had, parallels is inaccessible.
