This is perhaps a stupid question, but my theory is to begin from the beginning, so here goes. :) Did you tell gmail to use pop3 from the site itself? Log into your account, configure it that way, etc? I recently configured my accounts for Apple mail, but am using imap, so haven't tried this method personally. Just some extremely basic suggestions.
