Hi,

You can recover from this in a number of ways:

1.  By going under the Window menu and choosing the main window for the app.  
works in iTunes, AddressBook and some others.

or...

2.  Sometimes you can press key combinations like cmd-1 or cmd-option-1 to 
bring up the main menu.  these usually have menu items attached as well.  As in 
Mail, you press cmd-1 to bring up the InBox window but you can also find this 
item under the Goto option under the Mailbox menu.

or...

3.  There are occasions when you need to press cmd-n or go under the File menu 
and choose New or New Window.

There isn't really a "one thing fixes all" for this situation but I've found, 
in most cases, there is some sort of option so that you don't need to Quit and 
Re-Open the apps.
