Well, it's really a bit dumb to see IPhones and such without ogg or flac support, and it's one of many reasons why I haven't adopted IPhone and probably never will. by the way, did you check the app store for plugins to support the open source formats?
As far as the error when converting, did you try a repair permissions in disc utility? also, did you check the permissions on your temp folder? I've just had a quick look, and I'm not really clear on how max handles temp folders, but if you have a custom temp folder set it's permissions may not be set properly. That's the only thing I can come up with. It's a strange one no mistake.
