Yes it does work.  Were you able to try PodPhone-To-Mac?  It is very accessible 
as well and I'm pretty sure it lets you do the transfer without purchasing.  
There are some features that do require purchase but the kind of transfer 
you're looking for should be able to be done without a purchase.
