I've been in contact with Ed Hamrick, the developer of VueScan. The latest version of VueScan now works great. I just had to press Cmd-N to produce a beautiful RTF file of an article from New SCientist magazine.
I haven't yet got the RTF file to open automatically, but I'm working on it. As far as I'm concerned, this is the simplest OCR solution on the Mac so far. You can download VueScan from: http://www.hamrick.com/ There are two Mac versions, 32 bit and 64 bit. I tested the 64 bit version.
