Hello Teresa, MS Word documents lose their formatting in TextEdit, but it is usually quite well conserved in Pages.
However, any tables show up in Pages as a highlighted space. I've found that copying this space into a Numbers document gives me the table. This isn't good, but it's a workaround that works.
