Hi All USB ports are not created equal. Sometimes a usb port can't deliver enough power to operate the hardware you plugged in. A braille display takes a lot of power and maxes out the limited ability of a usb port to deliver. So it sounds to me like the USB ports on your mac aren't delivering enough power to drive the cells of your display. To test this, simply unplug the uSB cable and switch to bluetooth on your mac.
