I know I'm still mostly a mac newbie, and I know almost nothing about chat
clients, but have you tried Adium? I don't know if
it does whatever you're trying, but it's fairly simple to use.
Just a suggestion, and I apologize in advance if it's way out in left field.

Subject: Giving up on I R C

Hello again guys.

I'm sorry, but I just tried xchat, and honestly am finding this client even
more confusing than Colloquy. Unless someone can
give me more specific help how to get the notifications set and working, I'm
pretty much giving up. I don't have time right
now to get frustrated over this, which I am. So, I'm taking a break with this.
It's not worth me getting ticked over it. I
got more important things to do frankly. Having said that, thanks for
everyone's help.

Chris.
