While there are things about the new Lion that I'm working on getting used to, the one thing I have really come to love is the ability to have so many new voice options for free. I initially downloaded them just for fun and because I have always wanted different voices, but couldn't justify plunking down my hard-earned cash to buy them, but now, I am finding them quite useful. I don't know about you guys, but sometimes when I am reading a long document using text to speech, listening to one voice for too long puts me into this sort of mind-numbing trans-like state and breaks my attention span, sort of like listening to one speaker at a convention or in a lecture who goes on way too long and you start to tune them out. I was thinking that, with reading a long document, it would be great to change voices occasionally just for a sense of variety. I think it would be cool if I could get Lion to change voices periodically for me through a long document, say every few paragraphs or something. I can see so many uses for the multiple voices. For instance, as someone who loves to write, it would be cool to create a story and have each character using a different voice. Plus, having choices in voices is like having choices in what you eat or wear. You have different moods and different needs, and being able to just switch on the fly makes the computing experience so much more interesting and enjoyable. I think it would be fun to set up something where, while reading E-mail, Lion could switch the voice to match the writer. For instance, if I knew that a person was an Australian female, I could have Lion programmed to use an Australian female voice to read that person's message. I guess it's sort of gimmicky really, but still, it adds an interesting touch to what can otherwise be pretty mundane computing tasks.
