Hi Dan, Paul, Mike, and Others,

Like Mike, I've used both SuperDuper! and Carbon Copy Cloner. And like Mike
and Dan, I'm mostly using CCC right now, but I think it's more a question of
personal preference. For the purposes of making a bootable clone of your hard
drive, which is one of the main uses of these programs in contrast to Apple's
built-in Time Machine backup, either program will work: this functionality is
complete in the free trial download of SuperDuper!

Mike Bombich (developer of CCC) did work for Apple for several years after
writing the first few versions of CCC for his own work as an IT support guy in
higher education, and then making it generally available. However, he's
currently working on his own projects, so there is no direct affiliation with
Apple now.

Lynne Smith, one of the mods/owners of the mac-access list wrote up a nice
article on making backup clone drives with CCC, SuperDuper! or with Terminal:
http://www.mac-access.net/Extras/System_Backup.html

As Mike says, both of these are good products. I like the fact that CCC gives
good, brief descriptions, and seems to be a bit faster. However, many new
users like the more extensive documentation of SuperDuper! So it really is a
question of style, here.

I have one question for others who have used these products. Does anyone who
uses a Bootcamp partition know the preferred means of backup via these software
packages? I'm asking for someone else, since I don't use Windows on my Mac.
My understanding from reading the FAQs is that CCC will copy the Bootcamp
partition, but that you can't directly boot into the Bootcamp partition using
the cloned drive. You can copy the Bootcamp partition back onto your main hard
drive after you've done a system upgrade. It appeared to me that
Super Duper! would not handle the Bootcamp partition at all, although both
these products can handle backing up a Virtual Machine.

Does anyone know how Bootcamp partitions (using Windows XP) work in Lion? The
reason this may be tricky is that the Lion installation creates a recovery
partition, and I don't believe the system "knows" about Bootcamp partitions
that may be present on the disk when it writes the new recovery partition.
Thanks for any pointers on this.

Cheers,

Esther
