I just interacted with the splitter between the messages and preview pane and 
then did a vo+left arrow a million times I think until I think it said zero.  
As far as conversations go, I usually just arrow to the one I want and then hit 
tab and it starts reading the last unread message or sometimes just the last 
message.  If you have quick nab on, just hit up and down arrow to have it read 
the messages.  You can just hit command r to reply to a message.  The only 
thing I can't seem to figure out is how to read the message headers from that 
area, but if you needed to you could go back and expand the conversation and 
arrow down through each individual message or just do a reply and look below 
the message to see who it was from.  I know that is probably a little 
convoluted, but it's getting late :).
