If you are in threaded view you do not need to do VO J.

Just find the message you wish to read and press tab and if that does not work, 
press VO left or right arrow to get Voice Over to read automatically.

You might not like my next statement, but Mark's method is the best so far as 
it works without any fuss and minimal key presses.  I know some will not like 
what I say sorry.
