I did exactly that. While focused on a message, (I was interacting with the text area), I stopped interacting with the text and then VO+up arrow to the header group. I interacted with the header group and found the from field. I found, however, that I could not highlight the sender and that meant that VO+shift+m did not come up at all. Again, I did interact with the header group and with the header information itself. I have my headers showing as normal in the view tab off the prefs window.
