When connecting to Windows file shares I usually have to put into the
"connect to server" an URL that looks like this:
smb://server_ip_address/share_name
Then it asks for the username and password and I'm in.

What error do you get when you try to connect?

Thank you very much! Well, I have verified the IP address of my
windows machine, but my mac is unable to connect. I have a feeling
there is something I need to setup on the windows side to correct
this. Guess I will need to do some research into what exactly to
change. But this does sound like a much more economical approach to
accomplishing my task. :-)

I just use command K. It works nicely since I'm using static IP's.
So, I go to finder.
Hit Command K.
Type smb://192.168.1.# and hit enter.
Now I'm connected although depending on how your shares are set up
you may need to enter a username and password.
Now anything on my mac can use the shares on my windows machine.

Good day all! I writing to find out if any of you might happen to
have any recommendations for an app that wold allow me to move
files between my mac and windows machines. We have one windows
machine that we are using specifically for storage and as our media
warehouse, if you will. We keep all of our music and movies on the
windows machine and stream them to the apple TV and other devices
in the house. However, when we use one of the macs to do the
ripping, which is our preferred mode, it seems to be a pain in the
rear to get our files from one platform to another. The easiest
way for us would be to either put the copied files onto an external
drive and connect it up to the desired computer, or grab the files
directly over our network connection. I am currently running Lion
on all mac machines and windows 7 on the other machine. This is
still somewhat of a learning experience for me in some respects. :-)
