Eric, I have a first generation Intel iMac and I have not had any problems connecting an iPhone to it. I do not use that machine any longer since I gave it to my kid, but I don't recall having any problems. If you can connect an iPad to it, the iPhone should work as well. Have you tried other cables? Are you going through a hub by chance? An interesting issue.
