These are ARIA (accessible rich internet application) roles which provide more semantic meaning to what a particular spot on the page really is. You can read more about the available roles in the W3C's ARAI specification here:

http://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria/roles#landmark_roles

The spec for this was more or less done back in 2008. Browsers and screen readers have been adding support ever since. I could be wrong but Safari/VO might be one of the last to adopt. IE picked it up with version 9 and Firefox had it back at version 3. I think Opera had it back in 2008. I'm assuming that Chrome, based on Webkit, is also late to the game as it only recently gained voiceover support.

ah. what do those terms mean? and do you know why voiceover would be reading
all this other text for the link and then when I interact with the link i get
to see the link title that voiceover should be reading? I've talked to others
and no one else seems to have this problem! but it makes browsing the web kind
of annoying cuz I keep having to interact with links!

The text that is being announced like "banner", "search", "main" and
"complementary" are landmarks. They have been there a while in websites but, Voiceover did not previously
announce them.

hey all

I finally was able to update to Lion last night! finally got the funds and got
home from my cabin where I had good internet. the install went off without a
hitch…easiest install I've ever done!! and I really like the new layout in mail
though I do have a couple questions about it too. but so far I'm really loving
Lion and have no want or need to switch back!

Safari seems a little interesting, though. Voiceover seems to be reading some
things rather interestingly that it didn't before. for example, when I go to my
facebook page now, either the mobile site or the regular site, voiceover keeps
talking about entering banner. leaving banner. entering navigation. entering
complimentary. I'm assuming a banner is a frame, but why would the terminology
change? also, instead of reading me peoples' first and last name as it used
too, it now just says their facebook nicknames or sometimes just profile.php or
a bunch of numbers. it's like it's looking under the link title at maybe a
badly coded alt text? or some other text not visible on the screen. why would
it be doing this? I'm not one for moving backwards to classic views or anything
like that, I'd rather move forward and take changes in technology as they come,
but this announcing things weirdly could make a lot of websites look less
accessible than they are. is anyone else finding this and is there a way to get
voiceover to read things on websites as they are?

thanks and I hope you all are having a great day!
peace and positivity
