Hello Simon! I have the exact same problem and concern with you on this matter. I am a native Greek speaker but I read and write in English as well. I saw this happening on my macbook pro which I updated to use Lion, and that's the reason I keep my iMac with the older OS. I will Emaill Apple accessibility for this as well.
