There is one other option for deauthorization of computers. 

If you have five (the max) authorized computers then you can deauthorize all 
computers in the Apple Store.  This is described in the iTunes help.

So the process of making a computer safe for resale should be.

1. Make a backup with a cloner, and verify the cloner disk will boot the system.
2. Migrate software and documents to the new system as you feel appropriate.
3. Deauthorize iTunes and other services from the old computer.
4. Reinstall the OS with a jump to tools->Disk Utilities and reformat the 
primary partition using a write over deleted items.
5. Sell your old system as you prefer.  

Note: now that Apple is buying back some systems at its stores, it might be 
that they could handle all this for you.
