If you open the short cut menu with VO shift M on some text that says data detector, you can perform various actions. For example, if someone sends an email containing the date and time of a meeting, I can use VO shift M to bring up a menu that includes the option of creating a quick cal event. Choose that option, and the information will automatically be entered into the edit fields for creating an iCal event. You may have to edit things like the title of the event, but it is still faster than starting from scratch.
I believe you can also do things like add an email or phone number to contacts with VO shift M on a data detector containing either of these two pieces of information. I agree it can be annoying, and there ought to be some way of controlling when it is and is not announced, but it can also be a pretty handy feature.
