I use Transmit, but I don't actually use the app, just put in the FTP information and have it "mount as disk," in finder. While FTP (command K) doesn't set the right permissions (even after selecting to log in as administrator), and as you say it's pesky slow and sluggish with anything large, Transmit seems to be able to mount it with the correct permissions and make it run much more smoothly.
