Hi Banu,
When I first got my mac, the problem I had, was that, when moving from windows
to mac, I didn't have a clue on the simplest tasks. It seemed a hell of a job
to find out every little thing yourself. Like: how do I open a folder on the
mac? Well, you get an answer to this if you ask for it, but as a new mac user,
it's easy to get lost, because what do you do next if you pressed the keys and
you have your folder open? This was the same feeling in all areas. I felt like
a complete idiot, though several parts of me were missing. Lol.

My advice. If you are new to the mac this list is where you can get started.
There are a lot of intelligent and patient people here, and now that I have
overcome the beginner issues, I found I can now answer some of other people's
questions myself. Every new mac user starts out like you do now, and for me,
that was hard at first. But don't worry. The mac is a breeze to work on, and
soon enough you will likely say the same thing.

The first thing to do, which was very helpful for me personally, is go through
the voiceover quick start tutorial, control option command f8,to learn how
voiceover works. You wrote that voiceover does not talk everywhere. Once you
understand how to work with things on the screen, like buttons, sliders, menus
and such, and you know that the voiceover cursor is an imaginary small window
that you move across the screen, to hear what is there, you will get the hang
of it. The voiceover tutorial will help you get started in reading the screen.

Second, I learned a lot by browsing the mac help. When you start your mac, you
land at the desktop. The program that makes the desktop appear, and that
controls it, is called the finder. Finder on the mac is what my computer, or
windows explorer, used to be on windows. From finder, so, from the desktop, you
can open help and browse it. At the top of your desktop, and at the top of
almost all programs, is a menu bar, running from left to right across the
screen. Press control option m, m as in menu, to get to the menu bar. Then, use
right arrow to move across it, till you find the word help. To open the help
menu, now move down with down arrow. You will find something that reads: help
center. Press vo spacebar on it to open the help center. Now, read the screen,
just as you learned in the voiceover tutorial, and you will find all sorts of
self study information.

A third good resource is to press control option h. If you do, the voiceover
help menu will open. Choose: online help, from this menu. This will give you
another page full of subjects you can read.

If you have any difficulty trying these things, please write back, and others
and I will help. But, don't be overwhelmed. The mac is a forrest full of little
diamonds, and there is no single book or website to tell you where they all
are. You don't need to know everything. Start with what you need, and begin
with simple things.

For example, don't ask us how to use the finder. That is too big of a question.
Finder can do many useful things, but you don't need them at once. Once you are
at your desktop, ask yourself a little question, just for today. Which program
can I use to browse the web. The answer is safari. How can I start it? The
answer is in the resources above. Try to run a program, and see how far you
get. If you're stuck, try the program's own help and you will learn. If you get
lost, ask here.
Be patient. It will come to you, but it takes time and effort. Or another
question: now that I can read help, how do I shut down my mac? How do I know my
battery status, if you have a laptop? Is it easy to email from a mac? If you
start out with that type of questions, you will get easy answers. But none the
less. It can happen that you don't understaand what you are doing. But just do
what people answer you, and the big picture will drop into place later on.

I stuffed away my mac, after one month of trouble, because I had the feeling
that the mac world was too big, and I didn't know where to go first. I took it
out a few months later, and bit by bit, things started happening. You have
people to ask. Good luck.
Talk later.
Paul.
