I've had a hard time with this as well.
Under system pref, where you unchecked the lighting, do you know what the
slider beside that is? I slid it down to 0, but honestly, I'm not sure what
it is. :)

I seem to be unable to turn off the keyboard lighting on my MBA. I've
tried pressing F5 to dim it, and I've also made sure that the light
keyboard automatically option is unchecked in system prefs. Can anyone
think of anything else I might try?
